The Year in Basic Thyroid Cancer Research.

Background: Every year, the American Thyroid Association (ATA) Annual Meeting opening session features presentations covering the most recent advances in the three major areas of thyroidology: basic, clinical, and surgical. As the ATA did not have an annual meeting in 2020, because of the COVID19 pandemic, the 2021 meeting opened with a special "Two Years in Thyroidology" session. Methods: A PubMed electronic search was conducted to identify original basic science research studies on thyroid cancer published between October 2019 and September 2021. Methodologically rigorous studies that were deemed most likely to influence the field of basic science research in thyroid cancer were grouped into three thematic units: Genetics and Genomics, Molecular Biology and Signaling, and Preclinical and Translational Science. Four publications for each category were chosen for discussion. Results: Selected studies covered topics ranging from the genetics of thyroid cancer predisposition to the genomics of anaplastic thyroid cancer evolution, from novel molecular pathways involved in thyroid cancer pathogenesis to potentially game-changing imaging and therapeutic innovations. Conclusions: The past two years, in the face of unique COVID19 pandemic-associated hurdles, have witnessed a large number of important developments in basic and translational thyroid cancer research. These studies not only have shed novel light on a number of long-standing scientific questions but have also highlighted the major challenges and open questions that still remain to be addressed in the coming years.

A blueprint for nursing innovation centers.

BACKGROUND: The interest in and demand for healthcare innovation has heightened amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations are challenged to balance the goals of daily operations with innovation to stay relevant and compete in the marketplace. Innovation is critical for not only the success and sustainability of organizations, but the well-being of the faculty, staff, and clients they serve. PURPOSE: In this article, we present an overview of several Nursing Innovation Centers in the United States as well as examples of colleges without formal innovation centers but who are addressing innovation in their programs. METHODS: We examined the subjective experience of nursing innovation in seven colleges of nursing using semi-structured intervieweds and thematic analysis. FINDINGS: We discuss four themes for creating an innovation center or innovation focus and six themes important for sustainability and impact. In addition, we provide a working model for these themes and provide lessons learned along with trends and recommendations for the future. DISCUSSION: This information provides guidance and a framework for academic and practice organizations aspiring to create opportunities for innovation to flourish in their institutions. We also encourage leadership to critically evaluate and address biases in faculty hiring, research evaluation, publication practices, educational opportunities and mentoring to overcome the diversity innovation paradox.

Wisdom Shared: Health System Nurse Executives Share Success Strategies for Building High-Performing Nursing Organizations.

With the evolution from single healthcare entities to health systems, the role of the system chief nurse executive (SCNE) has evolved. The SCNE leads at the highest executive level in the system and has continuum of care accountability. To effectively support the scope and breadth of the SCNE role, the organizational structure must contain key elements to ensure success. This article outlines the key elements of a system nursing organization and serves to aid in the development, improvement, and sustainability of successful system nursing structures.

Not Part of the Job: An Analysis of Characterizations of Workplace Violence against Nurses in Canada by Unions and Professional Associations.

In the spring of 2019, Canada's House of Commons Standing Committee on Health reviewed the issue of workplace violence in healthcare and issued a report with nine recommendations. By summer that year, the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions had two active campaigns on workplace violence characterized by a strong social media presence. In 2020, a private member's bill was sponsored to amend Canada's Criminal Code in cases of assault against a healthcare worker. In the face of these developments, we were interested in the framing of the problem of workplace violence by professional and labour organizations in Canada. We examined documents, websites and social media posts from selected nursing unions and professional associations, including both national and provincial organizations. We found that nursing unions and professional associations have distinctive views on workplace violence. We argue that these divergent understandings preclude the creation of consistent and successful political and organizational strategies that would help create safe workplaces for nurses.

Civil Disobedience, Not Merely Conscientious Objection, In Medicine.

Those arguing that conscientious objection in medicine should be declared unethical by professional societies face the following challenge: conscientious objection can function as an important reforming mechanism when it involves health care workers refusing to participate in certain medical interventions deemed standard of care and legally sanctioned but which undermine patients' rights. In such cases, the argument goes, far from being unethical, conscientious objection may actually be a professional duty. I examine this sort of challenge and ultimately argue that these acts of conscience done in the interest of reforming professional norms or medical regulations are best understood as episodes of civil disobedience rather than episodes of conscientious objection. In contrast to the private, exempting nature of conscientious objection, civil disobedience is a public breach of a norm or law undertaken with the aim of bringing about a change in governmental policies or professional standards. Consequently, clinicians may have a duty to engage in civil disobedience even while professional societies are right to declare limitations on the ethical appropriateness of conscientious objection.

The Latin American Society for Developmental Biology: a successful history.

The Latin American Society for Developmental Biology (LASDB) is one of the newest societies in this field. However, despite being new, this society already had a highly important impact on the advancement of Developmental Biology across Latin America and globally. From its conception, the society began with the establishment of courses and congresses at the frontiers of knowledge and with the participation of researchers from Latin American countries and other regions, creating an academic and fraternal environment. The first LASDB congress was held in 2003, and recently, in 2019, the LASDB celebrated its tenth meeting, besides the Pan-American congress organized in 2007. Since the creation of this society and throughout its consolidation, the LASDB has been fortunate in receiving the support of highly prominent Developmental Biology societies, with which it has established links and collaboration that have clearly promoted Development Biology not only in Latin America but also in other parts of the world. At this moment, the LASDB looks to the future to continue supporting science in Latin America as it has done up to the present.

The Wisdom and Vision From the ACMEGS Inaugural Decade.

Concise history of fascinating magnetoencephalography (MEG) technology and catalog of very selected milestone preclinical and clinical MEG studies are provided as the background. The focus is the societal context defining a journey of MEG to and through clinical practice and formation of the American Clinical MEG Society (ACMEGS). We aspired to provide an objective historic perspective and document contributions of many professionals while focusing on the role of ACMEGS in the growth and maturation of clinical MEG field. The ACMEGS was born (2006) out of inevitability to address two vital issues-fair reimbursement and proper clinical acceptance. A beacon of accountable MEG practice and utilization is now an expanding professional organization with the highest level of competence in practice of clinical MEG and clinical credibility. The ACMEGS facilitated a favorable disposition of insurances toward MEG in the United States by combining the national replication of the grassroots efforts and teaming up with the strategic partners-particularly the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), published two Position Statements (2009 and 2017), the world's only set of MEG Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs; 2011) and surveys of clinical MEG practice (2011 and 2020) and use (2020). In addition to the annual ACMEGS Course (2012), we directly engaged MEG practitioners through an Invitational Summit (2019). The Society remains focused on the improvements and expansion of clinical practice, education, clinical training, and constructive engagement of vendors in these issues and pivotal studies toward additional MEG indications. The ACMEGS not only had the critical role in the progress of Clinical MEG in the United States and beyond since 2006 but positioned itself as the field leader in the future.
